The clinic, located at 3401 Fourth Street NW, is one of the UNM Health System’s biggest, featuring 22 exam rooms, a radiology suite, pharmacy and laboratory and large community meeting room. The UNM Health Sciences Center and UNM Hospitals forged valuable partnerships with the community while planning for and building the clinic. Now those partnerships are poised to grow.

From her vantage point behind the counter of UNM Hospital’s Espresso Café, coffee barista Brittany Maestas says it’s impossible not to notice the kids who are battling cancer. Many have lost their hair during treatment. Later this week, Maestas and some of her co-workers will join dozens of other Albuquerque-area volunteers in shaving their heads to show support for these young and brave patients, and to raise money for cancer research.

When Anne Holmes saw her doctor for a nagging pain in her upper arm last year, she learned that cancer cells from a massive tumor on her left kidney had invaded the long bone in her right arm and nearly ate through it. Now Holmes plans to rid her body of all her cancer cells and, at the same time, help others with metastatic kidney cancer. She is the first New Mexican to join a clinical trial that will teach her immune system to fight her cancer cells everywhere.
