HSC mourns death of faculty member, memorial set for Nov. 17

A memorial service has been scheduled for a talented and admired University of New Mexico anesthesiologist, who died unexpectedly at his home on Oct. 30.

Colleagues at the UNM Health Sciences Center were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Carey, MD, an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and director of the Anesthesiology Pre-operative Clinic, department Chair Hugh Martin, MD, said.

A graduate of the UNM School of Medicine, Carey completed his anesthesiology residency at Johns Hopkins University, before returning to UNM to join the faculty in 2010. Carey’s wife, Amber Rollstin, MD, is also a UNM medical school graduate and an associate professor in the UNM Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Mike was an outstanding anesthesiologist, a great man, and had a wonderful family and life,” Martin said. “He will be sorely missed.”

A memorial for Carey is scheduled from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the Domenici Center auditorium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carey’s name to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico. To offer a remembrance, visit the UNM School of Medicine's faculty memorial page.
