HSC speaking program has community groups listening

UNM Health Sciences Center physicians, nurses and administrators are reaching out to civic groups across Bernalillo County to help the community better understand the HSC and its healthcare role in New Mexico.

Since May, HSC experts have attended more than a dozen speaking engagements as part of the HSC’s Bernalillo County Community Speaking Program.

Launched in May, the program aims to make the community more aware of the patient care, education and research that happens at the HSC and to continue its long tradition of community involvement and education.

Rotary clubs and other business groups, as well as industry and trade associations that have offices and hold membership meetings in the Albuquerque area are among the diverse set of audiences the program has addressed.

The UNM experts — which include doctors, nurses and admin staff — have also reached out to neighborhood associations and libraries that host community speaking events. For example, in recent months UNM Hospital administrators have participated in town hall meetings across Albuquerque to answer questions relating to the Affordable Care Act and the impact on individuals and on the healthcare industry as a whole.

The program is always looking for new speakers. To participate, contact Billy Sparks, HSC executive director of communciations and marketing, at wpsarks@salud.unm.edu.
