U.S. Marines treat UNM Children’s Hospital patients with Toys for Tots donations

United States Marines Staff Sargent Adrian Hernandez (left) and Sargent Paul Baive (right) present UNM Children’s Hospital patients with gifts as part of this year’s Toys for Tots drive, sponsored by UNM School of Medicine’s Center for Surgical Critical Care (CSCC) with participation by the Critical Care Student Interest Group and the New Mexico Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The month-long toy drive garnered more than 500 gifts this year for kids unable to celebrate the holidays at home. Organizer Mari Sol de Leon, coordinator for the CSCC, said this was the first year she’s been able to see the kids’ faces as gifts were handed out. “What a treat,” Mari exclaimed. “There’s something very special about a Marine in full dress uniform handing an awestruck child a toy. I’m sure these children will never forget it.”
