College of Pharmacy Welcomes Johnnye L. Lewis, Ph.D


            Johnnye Lewis, Ph.D. has joined the UNM College of Pharmacy as a Research Professor of Pharmacy (Toxicology) in the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

            Dr. Lewis brings to the College an extensive track record of research funding and publications in the areas of inhalation toxicology and neurotoxicology, as well as community outreach activities, environmental justice and community education.  Dr. Lewis received her doctorate in Pharmacology from the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Canada in 1989 subsequent to her M.S. in Psychology from the University of Victoria (Canada) in 1976 and her B.S. in Psychology from Miami University in Ohio in 1970. 

             As a faculty member of the College, Dr. Lewis will continue her NIH- and DOD- funded basic laboratory research on inhalation toxicology, while continuing to serve as Director of the UNM Environmental Health Sciences COEP (Community Outreach and Education Program) and UNM CEHP (Community Environmental Health Programs).  Dr. Lewis will support College of Pharmacy instructional programs within the graduate (M.S. & Ph.D) curriculum in the general areas of basic mechanisms of neurotoxicology, community-based participatory research, community-outreach and educational material development and program implementation.  Dr. Lewis will also support the College professional (Pharm.D.) programs in the areas of population health, unique cultural issues influencing health and health care in the state of New Mexico, and supporting recruitment efforts of underserved New Mexico populations into the Pharm.D. curriculum.  

             Dr. Lewis and her COEP and CHEP staff members are located in the house at 905 Vassar, and Dr. Lewis basic science research staff will be assigned laboratory space in the basement of NRPH adjacent to other Pharmaceutical Sciences Division research scientists.   Dr. Lewis was previously Research Professor of Internal Medicine in the UNM SOM.
