CME was rated in "exemplary compliance" for their planning process, needs assessment, evaluation of programs, mechanisms for program improvement, and CME Administration. Altogether, the CME Education showed innovative and creative processes in place from the planning to assessment of the office's CME classes.

The University of New Mexico has a long-standing commitment to the full continuum of medical education. An important mission of the School of Medicine is to improve and enhance health for the diverse populations of New Mexico through education.  Key to achieving this accreditation recognition have been the partnership efforts with the Department of Health, the Indian Health Service, the Association of Hispanic-serving Medical Schools and others.

Among the CME processes that were rated exemplary accreditation officials cited:

  • Using an innovative and creative planning processes to identify the appropriate methodology for an activity so that identified educational needs are linked to desired result for all CME activities;
  • Consistent use of needs assessment data from multiple sources to plan CME activities;
  • Consistent evaluation of the effectiveness of its CME activities in meeting identified educational needs as measured by practice application and/or health status improvement;
  • Use of innovative and creative mechanism to measure the effectiveness of overall CME program with evidence that improvements are made on a regular basis.
  • An integrative annual review process by all Department chairs, associate deans for Education and SOM dean with an resulting action plan for the CME to continually improve the organizational framework.

The ACCME's Mission is the identification, development, and promotion of standards for quality continuing physician medical education for maintenance of competence and incorporation of new knowledge to improve quality medical care for patients and their communities.

The ACCME fulfills its mission through a voluntary self-regulated system for accrediting CME providers and a peer-review process responsive to changes in medical education and the health care delivery system.

The accreditation period extends to March 2009.
