Dr. Beetstra Leaving UNM, Dr. Cuttrell to Be Acting Division Chief for Dental Services

Dr. Steve Beetstra, Chief of the Division of Dental Services will leave his faculty position at UNM effective June 30, 2005 to accept a position at the University of Arkansas Children Hospital, according to Jorge Wernly, M.D., Chair for the SOM Department of Surgery.

"During his relatively short (six years) tenure at our institution, Steve has made tremendous contributions to the department, the SOM and the State of New Mexico ," said Wernly. "He was the first dentist ever hired by our institution. Now, six years later, the Division has six faculty members; provides services in multiples locations thought the State - mainly to the underserved has received several DOH grants and contracts and created a Dental Residency program.

"None of this has gone without notice," said Wernly. "Our program has received the attention of public officials, legislators and the Governor, and was recently featured in the New York Times. We wish Steve all the best."

The leadership of the Division will be assumed by Dr. Gary W. Cuttrell who will become Acting Division Chief and by Dr. Peter Jensen who will become the Program Director of the Residency Program.
