Meghan Gerety M.D., has been appointed chief of staff at the Albuquerque Veteran Affairs Medical Center according to John Trotter, M.D., executive dean for the UNM School of Medicine. The appointment is a joint one between the VA and UNM. Gerety will also serve on faculty in theUNM School of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine.

Gerety has a background in health services research and has held career scientist awards from the VA Office of Health Services Research and Development.

Gerety received both her undergraduate and M.D. degrees from UNM. She received her training in internal medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University from 1978 to 1981 and served as chief resident and instructor of Internal Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University from 1981-82.

After a three year term serving in the U.S. Public Health Service at an Urban Health Initiative Clinic in San Antonio , Texas , Gerety completed a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Stanford University and the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Hospital . She then returned to San Antonio where she became the associate chief of staff and service line manager for Geriatrics and Extended Care at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and a professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio .

In addition to her academic duties, she has served as president and then chair of the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society, stepping down in 2006. Gerety is currently chair of the American Geriatrics Society's Foundation for Health in Aging and a member of the Relative Value Update Committee which advises Medicare on the Physician Fee Schedule.
