New Era of Cardiology Services Coming to UNM Hospital Through New Mexico Heart Institute partnership

It can be a scary time. You can’t seem to catch your breath, you’re sweaty and have pain in your left arm. You might be in the middle of a cardiovascular episode.

Episodes like this send patients to the emergency department for treatment and answers. Thanks to a new partnership with the New Mexico Heart Institute (NMHI), the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) continues to ensure UNM Hospital is the best place to treat these patients.

UNM Medical Group, Inc. and NMHI have reached an agreement to provide cardiac electrophysiology and cardiothoracic surgery services to patients at the hospital. This new era of cardiovascular treatment ensures stability and sustainability for patients, said Michael E. Richards, MD, MPA, UNM’s Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs.

“As New Mexico’s only Level I trauma center, we provide crucial cardiovascular care when seconds count,” Richards said. “This partnership strengthens our ability as a health care network to diagnosis, treat and save lives.”

NMHI is New Mexico’s largest cardiology practice and will supplement UNM Hospital’s expansive cardiology program. The hospital has a coronary care unit, cardiac catheterization lab, electrophysiology lab, echocardiography lab, heart station, nuclear cardiology laboratory and a 20-bed cardiac step-down unit.

“NMHI is excited to broaden our relationship with UNM Medical Group, Inc. by providing both electrophysiology and cardiothoracic surgery services,” said Trena Chagnon, Chief Operating Officer for NMHI. “It is these kinds of relationships that positively impact the healthcare delivery system by lowering costs while creating efficiency and stability. We are proud of the high quality, innovative care that NMHI physicians provide and we are confident that this relationship will benefit the residents of New Mexico. ”

This contract took effect January 1, 2018. For more information please contact Alex Sanchez, Public Information Officer, UNM HSC, at (505) 313-3429.
