HSC Announces Biochemistry/Molecular Biology Chair

Dr. Karlett Parra Succeeds Retired Dr. William Anderson

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Karlett Parra, Ph.D., has been named the UNM School of Medicine Chair for the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Parra will succeed William Anderson, Ph.D., who recently retired after 31 years of service to the School of Medicine.

Parra earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from SUNY Upstate Medical University and joined UNM’s School of Medicine (SOM) in 2007. Previously, she was an associate professor of chemistry at Ball State University and a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Le Moyne College.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is the study of the molecular and genetic bases of cellular processes. School of Medicine faculty conducts research to increase current knowledge of the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of normal and abnormal cellular processes.

Parra is the recipient of numerous professional awards and accolades related to program building, research and professional mentoring. Among other successes, her research has contributed knowledge to the understanding of protein transporters from fungi to prostate cancer.

“This truly is a professional honor for me and a very exciting time to lead such a vital department within UNM’s Health Sciences Center,” Parra says. “I look forward to working with the many accomplished scientists in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , and associated departments, centers and programs – as well as SOM administration – in advancing our health research missions.”
