HSC Announces Members of New Board of Directors

Dr. Paul Roth, UNM Chancellor for Health Sciences, today announced the names of seven people who will serve as the first members of the newly created UNM Health Sciences Center Board of Directors. The board was formed to simplify and streamline the governance of the Health Sciences Center, and will operate under the authority of and report directly to the UNM Board of Regents.

The board structure has been designed to be composed of: three members of the UNM Board of Regents; the sitting chair of the UNM Hospitals Board of Trustees;and three members from the community. The selection of the Board members was made by Jack Fortner, president of the UNM Board of Regents, with the advice of Dr.Rothand Jerry Geist, chairman of the UNM Hospitals Board of Trustees.

The new Board will first be chaired by Regent Carolyn J. Abeita of the Van Amberg, Rogers, Yepa & Abeita Law Firm. The other two Regents to serve on the board are Don L. Chalmers of Don Chalmers Ford, and Lt. Gen. Bradley C. Hosmer, USAF (Ret), former superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

UNM Hospitals Board of Trustees ChairmanJerry Geist of Santa Fe Center Enterprises and community membersJohn "Mel" Eaves, of the Eaves and Mendenhall Law Firm and a former UNM Regent;Ann Rhoades of People Ink; and Ron Solimon, president and CEO of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, fill out the Board composition.

Through the board, the Health Sciences Center will increase the efficiency of its operations, become a highly integrated organization, create the UNM Health System and assure a balance between HSC's academic and clinical missions.

"This is a great step forward for the Health Sciences Center," said Dr. Roth. "We arecreating this board to oversee the patient careHSC provides at all of our clinical facilities, what we are now calling the UNM Health System. However, this initiative will not change the oversight of HSC's academic mission or our relationship with the main UNM campus," he added.

Regents President Jack Fortnersaid, "While all actions by the new governance committee will still go to the full Board of Regents for review, this new structure will simplify the process by which the Regents provide oversight of HSC's operations. I look forward to efficiencies it will bring."

The Health Sciences Center consists of the UNM School of Medicine, the UNM College of Nursing, the UNM College of Pharmacy, UNM Hospitals and Clinics, the UNM Cancer Center, the UNM Medical Group, the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center and the HSC Library and Informatics Center.
