HSC To Join TCOYD Diabetes Conference

Diabetes affects the lives of nearly 10.2% of adults and children in the state of New Mexico. It is a growing epidemic that can affect anyone at any time. In order to combat the rising number of diabetes cases and prevent complications that can arise from the disease, it is crucial to provide those in need with access to specialized diabetes education.

On May 21st, the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center, in partnership with, the Presbyterian Hospital, Diabetes Network, the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, will be hosting Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), the renowned conference and health fair for people with diabetes at the Albuquerque Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The critically acclaimed program will feature some of the nations leading diabetes experts including Steven Edelman, MD, founder and director of TCOYD; Virginia Valentine, CNS, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE; Ivan Pinon, MD; as well as UNM Health Sciences professor Mark Burge, MD who are all living well with diabetes.

The program will feature cutting-edge lectures and seminars, as well as special guests Kim Lyons, former fitness trainer on The Biggest Loser and Chef Robert Lewis, the happy diabetic. The conference will also include hands-on sessions focusing on fitness, diet, complications, the latest treatment options, screenings and more. In addition, a health fair with more than 50 informational exhibits from national and local diabetes-related companies and organizations will be open throughout the day. A banquet-style lunch and healthy snacks will also be provided.

“I strongly encourage people with diabetes, those at risk and their loved ones to attend this program. I invite them to take this day and dedicate it solely to their health,” says Dr. Edelman.

SPACE IS LIMITED; pre-registration is recommended. Registration fees are $20 per person. Fees include a banquet lunch, healthy snacks and all conference activities. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE BY CALLING TCOYD.
