Inauguration of New UNM Hospital and N.M. Lions Club Telemedicine Vision Project

Representatives from UNM Hospital, the New Mexico chapter of Lions Club International and the New Mexico Department of Health will join together at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22 for the inauguration of the UNM Hospital and Lions Telemedicine Vision Project. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in middle-aged adults.

About 115,000 people have diabetes in the state of New Mexico, and about 38,000 of them have diabetic retinopathy.

“Telemedicine screening of diabetic retinopathy is one of the missions of the new UNMH Eye Center. Our goal is to reach the community, especially areas where people have limited access to the specialized ophthalmic services, so that this devastating disease can be detected early and appropriate therapeutic interventions can be made through laser or surgery” said Arup Das, M.D., chief of Ophthalmology, UNM Hospitals.

Speakers at the event will include Das, as well as Jamie Silva-Steele, Administrator Ambulatory Services, UNM Hospital; Ray Stewart, Public Health Region 5 Director, Las Cruces; and Jeff Kritz, Lions Club, Albuquerque.

The ceremonies will take place at the New Mexico Department of Health offices located at 1170 N. Solano, Room 1101, Las Cruces, NM.
