No Bones About It

Diet and exercise can help fend off osteoporosis.

Though the thinning and weakening of bones, also known as osteoporosis, is a natural part of aging, it’s possible for you to guard against bone fractures. 

“Over time, the architecture of the bones falls apart and so seniors are at a much greater risk for fracturing,” says Gabriella Good, MD, medical director of the UNM Senior Health Clinic. “It is a very serious condition. Almost all of my patients have some form of osteoporosis going on.”

Though osteoporosis is common, the good news is that diet and exercise can help build strong bones and prevent or manage osteoporosis. Some medications can help prevent and even improve osteoporosis, Good says.

Unfortunately, folks usually find out they have osteoporosis after taking a fall and breaking a bone. 

The UNM Senior Health Clinic, which has been recognized for its patient-centered care, specializes in providing health care for seniors. For example, the Senior Health Clinic has podiatry care, a falls clinic, psychiatric care, a social worker and other senior health care services. 

The Senior Health Clinic is specifically designed to care for patients who are at least 75 years old. Staff from the Senior Health Clinic will go to your home to perform a home-safety evaluation after you’ve had an illness. 

“We make sure there aren’t a lot of slippery surfaces or electrical cords in the hallway,” Good explains.

In addition to adding in muscle-strengthening exercises and a 30-minute daily walk, maintaining a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables and vitamin D, can also be good medicine. 

“It’s never too late to exercise,” she says.
