"Intersections New Small Works" is the title of a new exhibit by sisters Ruth Avra and Ana Kleinman that will show at the Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery at UNM Hospital through November 19.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Thursday, September 23 from 4-6 p.m.

The gallery is located on the Fifth Floor Ambulatory Care Center at UNM Hospital, which is located at 2211 Lomas Blvd., NE.

For this exhibition, collaborative artists and sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Kleinman have created a site specific installation of works for the hospital gallery. Known for their three dimensional wall pieces combining metal and painting, the artists will debut a new body of two dimensional works for this exhibition.

From a distance the work looks sleek and high contrast with hyper-pigmented painting on wood and shiny metal surfaces. Yet up close the viewer is struck by hand sanded intricate patterns softening the metal and textural multilayered paintings inspired by natural surfaces.

The major piece will consist of a row of twenty-six small square pieces lining the hospital walls with color and striking design. Abstract and minimal in aesthetic, these pieces work on many levels of meaning. Intersecting lines represents the crossing of paths, separation and connection, the sisters themselves, and any other appropriate binary be it male/female, hard/soft, self/other, nature/manmade. Twenty-six panels reference the alphabet as building blocks for communication between two parties. The full spectrum of color through the panels symbolizes light and visual comprehension.

Similar to previous works, the panels can be grouped and reoriented in an almost infinite number of arrangements. All works will be for sale per panel with the artists donating 50% of proceeds to the hospital arts program.

The Kleinman sisters have exhibited their work in many prestigious venues. In 2008 they represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Biennale held in the National Museum of Art in China running in conjunction with the Summer Olympics. In 2009 they received impressive reviews for their solo exhibition at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, and in 2010 held a solo exhibition in New York. They have also had solo and group shows in Washington DC, New York City, Miami, Kolkata, India, and more. Look for their three dimensional work at the “Miniatures and More” exhibition opening October 23, 2010 at the Albuquerque Museum.

All proceeds from sales of Kleinman sisters works shown in the exhibit will benefit the Hospital Arts Program.
