The lifetime probability of developing breast cancer is now 1 in 7 women, up from the previous statistic of 1 in every 9 women. According to the American Cancer Society 2004 cancer statistics, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women. It is estimated that in 2004 there will be 1,020 new diagnosis of breast cancer in New Mexico. Because the majority of all breast cancers occur in women with no known risk factors, all women are considered at risk for the disease, with the risk increasing as a women ages.
Free public seminars are being offered prior to the luncheon. Topics include: "Celebrating Sexuality," presented by author and breast cancer survivor, Lois Hjelmstad and "Cutting Edge Treatments in New Mexico," by Melanie Royce, MD, PhD, director of the Multidisciplinary Breast Program at the UNM Cancer Research Treatment Center. Registration is required.
The Nancy Floyd Haworth Memorial Breast Cancer Lectureship is held annually in memory of the daughter of Dr. Vaun and Mary Floyd. Nancy Floyd Haworth died of breast cancer at the age of 42. The proceeds raised from the luncheon provide on-going education about breast cancer risk reduction, diagnosis, treatment and support and wellness programs to all New Mexico women through educational seminars, workshops and resource referrals. Luncheon tickets are $75. Advance reservations required. To make reservations, please call 505.462.3942
