FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Parents with young children are not the only people benefiting from the New Mexico Poison Center's 24-hour emergency telephone service.

The poison center provides immediate life-saving information for people of all ages in all types of poisoning situations that may involve drugs, medication errors, product misuses, alcohols, animal bites and stings, plants, pesticides, gasses, chemical spills, hazardous materials and environmental and occupational exposures.

The Center also prepares for and can respond to all-hazards emergency needs including biological or chemical terrorism or other mass exposure events.  Last year the Center assisted the State by providing information on vaccines to the public handling 1,100 calls during the flu epidemic.  The Center also assists emergency physicians when they need information about how to treat a poisoning and assists pharmacists when they need accurate and up-to-date drug information.

"The New Mexico Poison Center is the best resource for any poison-related emergency, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year," said Dr. Jess Benson, Director of the New Mexico Poison Center.

For "Poison Help" dial 1-800-222-1222.  A specially trained pharmacist is waiting to take your call.  The center also has services available for individuals who are non-English speaking and for the hearing impaired.

The New Mexico Poison Center is a public service program of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.  The center serves as a major teaching site for the UNM College of Pharmacy and Department of Emergency Medicine and is certified as a Regional Poison Center by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
