Prevention Center Receives $720,000 Grant

The UNM Prevention Research Center (UNM PRC) has been awarded a five-year, $720,000 grant from the Center for Disease Control and U.S. Health and Services department to promote prevention research across a variety of areas.

"Computerized Risk Assessment in an Employee Population "is the title of the grant awarded to UNM.   Principal Investigator Deborah Helitzer ScD, and other UNM PRC investigators will study of members of a university health center employee-based practice to test the effectiveness of an interactive behavioral and health risk assessment system to improve the mental and physical health outcomes in a multi-cultural population.

This award is the first of a five-year award granted to the UNM PRC to fulfill their mission of addressing the health promotion and disease prevention needs of New Mexican communities through participatory, science-based, health promotion and disease prevention research.

UNM is one of 33 academic institutions in 26 states to be awarded funding through a highly competitive process to receive a total of $21 million from the CDC in support of research that focuses on the underlying contributors to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

"Research is a major component in our nation's comprehensive efforts to reduce heart disease, diabetes and obesity," Secretary Thompson said. "This grant to the University of New Mexico will build on our research efforts to help all Americans live healthier, longer lives."
