Public Health Conference Set for May

UNM Health Sciences Center faculty, staff and students will be participating with the New Mexico Public Health Association during the 2010 New Mexico Public Health Association Annual Conference Social Justice & Public Health, to be held May 5-7 at the Radisson Hotel Albuquerque.

Keynote speaker at the conference will be Makani Themba-Nixon, Executive Director of The Praxis Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting community-based media and policy advocacy to advance equity and justice.

The keynote presentation, "Connecting the Dots: Making Health Justice Happen Right Where We Are" will present a comprehensive approach to building healthy communities through addressing issues of place and power relations.

Focus of the conference will include sessions on sharing work and research linking social justice and public health in New Mexico in a number of areas including working with communities, advocacy efforts, creating data and health impact assessments (HIA), working on behalf of children and youth, environmental health, and the social determinants of health.
