Richards Assumes SOM Emergency Medicine Chair

NEWS RELEASE July 11, 2007 Contact: Luke Frank, Media Relations Manager, 505/272-3679 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ALBUQUERQUE , NM – Michael Richards, M.D., MPA, assumed the Chair of UNM’s Department of Emergency Medicine effective July 1. Richards, who is director for UNM’s Center for Disaster Medicine and New Mexico’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team, will oversee the department’s clinical, research and academic components.

Richards performed his residency in Emergency Medicine at UNM and joined the faculty in 2000. He also has served as the State EMS Medical Director and Medical Director for the Office of Health Emergency Management at the New Mexico Department of Health.

Having been deployed to several high-profile natural and other disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Richards brings with him significant experience in emergency and trauma medicine, and public administration. His areas of specialty include EMS and Disaster Medicine.

David Sklar, M.D., who arrived at UNM’s Department of Emergency Medicine in 1980 and served as Chair for the department for 14 years, is now Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education for the School of Medicine.

“Dr. Sklar very effectively led our Department of Emergency Medicine through numerous challenges over the years, as emergency medicine and health care in general have experienced dramatic changes,” remarks Paul Roth, M.D., Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at UNM and Dean for the School of Medicine.

“Dr. Richards is a superb successor. His training and experiences in emergency medicine and public administration suit him well for the position.”
