Paul Roth, M.D., dean of the UNM School of Medicine and Interim Vice President for the UNM Health Sciences Center , recently announced that Valerie Romero-Leggott, M.D., has been promoted to Associate Dean of the School's newly formed Office of Diversity. Romero-Leggott was formerly director of the School's Office of Cultural and Ethnic Programs.
In addition to her duties related to directing the Office of Diversity, Romero-Leggott will also be directing the admissions, recruitment, and outreach components for the new BA/MD Combined Degree Program, set to begin in August, 2006.
"We are proud that our institution has been singled out as one of the top three Schools for the education of Hispanic medical students," said Roth. "We know as a minority/majority state, the unique health care needs of our multicultural and multilingual residents must be a priority in our training of physicians. Dr. Romero-Leggott is ideally suited to lead the efforts in attracting and retaining the mix of students from across the state who reflect New Mexico 's diversity and its human potential while working with community leaders to meet this state's healthcare needs."
Dr. Romero-Leggott has recently been awarded a $1.5M grant to enhance the educational pipeline for health professionals. The grant's goals will be achieved by collaborative relationships within the institution and between the institution and the community, said Roth.
