Secretary of New Mexico Department of Health,  Alfredo Vigil, M.D., will be the special guest speaker on Friday, July 24, 2009 during graduation exercises for UNM Health Sciences Office of Diversity students interested in health careers.

The Office of Diversity sponsors summer enrichment programs at a number of levels to encourage New Mexico students to train for health careers.

The programs focus on addressing the underrepresentation of minority health professionals in the health workforce by preparing students for graduate school through academically related coursework and health related activities. Those programs include:

Health Careers Academy (HCA) - Summer academic enrichment ( ACT prep) and health careers exposure for NM high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Undergraduate Health Sciences Enrichment Program (UHSEP) - Residential preliminary undergraduate experience,

academic enrichment and health careers training for incoming college freshmen.

MCAT + - Medical school preparation for pre-med student, including MCAT prep and pre-admissions workshops.

DAT + - Dental school preparation for pre-dental student, which includes DAT prep, interactive online workshops and introduction to the dental school application process.

Secretary Vigil will speak at the graduation exercises, scheduled to take place between 2-4 p.m. at the UNM Health Sciences Center Domenici Center Auditorium located at 1001 Stanford N.E. Light refreshments will follow at the in the Domenici Center Plaza.
