Service, Compassion and Dancing Spirit Live On Through UNM Department of Psychiatry Diana K. Quinn, M.D. Award Recipients
Heather Wood, M.D. and Jim Dietsch were presented the first Diana K. Quinn, M.D. award at the June 6 graduation ceremony. The award was developed in memory of Diana K. Quinn, M.D. and recognizes psychiatry residents and UNM Psychiatric Center employees who best exemplify Dr. Quinn's service, compassion and dancing spirit and encourages the recipients to expand these qualities in their work and home life.
Dr. Quinn, a faculty member at the UNM Psychiatry Center for 14 years and associate professor of psychiatry and the medical director of the Inpatient and Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) at the time of her death, passed away from leukemia May 13, 2003. "Not only was she a graceful, compassionate clinician who connected with people during the most difficult time of their lives but wonderful teacher," Dr. Kathryn Fraser said.
Dietsch, an employee at the Psychiatric Center for 25 years, was nominated for his professionalism and even-manner while dealing with patients in often difficult circumstances. Outside of work he is involved in patient role-playing for police training and plans to continue this after he retires this October.
Dr. Wood just completed her psychiatry residency at UNM and is the new Psychiatric Emergency Service medical director. Wood stepped into the position after Quinn passed away as a senior resident. She has done the work with similar grace and calmness as Dr. Quinn and has won the admiration of faculty and staff for her excellent work.
The Diana K. Quinn, M.D. Award will continue to honor psychiatry residents and UNM Psychiatric Center employees. An award plaque with the names of recipients will hang in the PES.
