UNM School of Medicine Associate Professor, C. Fernando Valenzuela, M.D., Ph.D., was recently awarded the Earl A. Walker Award.

The Walker Award is presented annually to a UNM faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in neuroscience research.

Valenzuela’s research explores the regulation of neuronal communication by alcohol in developing and mature brain circuits. His findings have contributed to a better understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and alcoholism.

He functions as an active member of the UNM community. In addition to his position as associate professor of Neuroscience, Valenzuela also serves as Director of the SOM M.D./Ph.D. Program as well as program director of a training grant for graduate students conducting alcohol research sponsored by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Valenzuela’s guidance and dedication has helped to shape the education and careers of numerous undergraduates, graduates and postdoctoral fellows.
