“Splash Away Cancer” fundraiser takes place May 20

Funds support UNM Cancer Center research and treatment

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is hosting its annual “Splash Away Cancer” swimming fundraiser on Saturday, May 20.

The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Armond H. Seidler Natatorium in UNM’s Johnson Center, 200 Cornell NE. On-site registration begins at 7:00 a.m.

The fundraiser, now in its third year, celebrates cancer survivors and honors those who lost their battle to the disease. All proceeds will support cancer research and patient care at the Cancer Center.

Swimmers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the event. They can choose to swim 500 yards or one or two miles and must sign a waiver to participate.

Swimmers can visit www.SplashAwayCancer.org to download forms and waivers, and register on the day of the event for a minimum donation of $25. Non-participants can also make an online donation.

The swim is sponsored by Lobo Aquatic Club, 93.3 KOB-FM, UNM Recreational Services, New Mexico Masters Swimming, Genesis Signs, Red Rock Roasters and Forms Plus.

The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is New Mexico’s official cancer center and the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in a 500-mile radius. Its 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists and radiation oncologists.
