A coalition of community groups, government agencies and health care providers will be gathering in Rio Rancho on May 1 in hopes of improving behavioral health care services in Sandoval County.

The Sandoval County Behavioral Health Coalition is hosting a summit to assess the state of behavioral health care in the county and to identify the community’s needs. The coalition – which includes Sandoval County, the City of Rio Rancho and UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center – will discuss what behavioral health resources are currently available and will establish ways in which community stakeholders can work together to provide the best behavioral health services to Sandoval County residents.

“We are pleased to be working with Sandoval County, the City of Rio Rancho and the multi-disciplinary agencies who currently provide Behavioral Health Services in our community,” says Jamie Silva-Steele, president and CEO of UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center. “At the summit, we hope to define the current services available in our community, identify gaps in services and develop our top priorities for service development and expansion.”

The summit will kick off with officials from Sandoval County and the City of Rio Rancho providing an overview of the state of behavioral health. Brandi Fink, PhD, of the UNM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences will then present grant opportunities from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), and attending community groups will briefly present what services they provide and where they see opportunities for improvement. Small group sessions will allow community groups to discuss their concerns and identify priority needs for behavioral health care. The summit will conclude with the participants selecting the top areas of focus for future research, funding and coordinated care efforts.

The Sandoval County Behavioral Health Coalition Summit is scheduled to begin at 9am on Friday, May 1 at Club Rio Rancho, 500 Country Club Dr. SE in Rio Rancho. Media are invited to attend.
