University of New Mexico Hospital CEO Steve McKernan recently announced that the University Hospital Service League has donated $500,000 to purchase equipment, including 10 new neo-natal monitors, for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Although the NICU area is currently under renovation, some monitors are already in service and more will become operational as the remodeling is finished.

A volunteer service and fund-raising organization, the UH Service League began some 27 years ago and today has 125 members. It operates a gift shop and espresso cart in the hospital and holds regular fundraising activities throughout the year.

The recent donation is the latest in about $2 million that the hospital has received from the Service League over the years. The organization also redecorated the recently renovated first floor chapel and raised $75,000 for educational activities for University Hospital staff and students within the community.

"For many, our volunteers are the face of University Hospital," McKernan said. "They are a remarkable group of men and women, who make hospital stays easier for patients and their families. Their contributions to our operations have been invaluable in maintaining the high level of service our patients expect."
