UNM Children's Hospital Bike Helmet Give Away
On Saturday, June 13, the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s will be giving away bicycle helmets and safety brochures for children in support of safety awareness and education. The event, starting at 8:30 a.m., will be held at the Kohl’s Department Store at 6800 Holly Ave. NE, Albuquerque, N.M.
“We’re honored that Kohl’s is working with UNM Children’s Hospital,” said Daniel Jaecks, development specialist for UNM Children’s Hospital. “Currently, there are more than 39,000 head injuries in children each year. With education and being able to provide information and safety equipment to children and their parents, our goal is to help reduce these numbers here in New Mexico and Kohl’s has given us the resources to help make that happen.”
Since 2007, Kohl’s has donated more than $42,000 to UNM Children’s Hospital. This year's grant will support a community outreach safety program for children that will include bike helmets and car seats along with other safety brochures.
Kohl's commitment to UNM Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares for Kidsâphilanthropic initiative. Kohl’s Cares for Kids includes a merchandise program featuring $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profits go toward supporting hospital partnerships like this one. Through 2008, Kohl's has raised more than $126 million dollars through its merchandise program. Other components of Kohl's Cares for Kids include Kohl's A-Team associate volunteer program; the Kohl’s Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program, recognizing stand-out kids for volunteer efforts in their communities; and fundraising gift cards for local schools and nonprofit organizations.
UNM Children’s Hospital serves more than 52,000 New Mexico children every year. The hospital offers the most comprehensive care for children available in New Mexico, and has the highest level of intensive care for children suffering from an illness or injury. Pediatric physicians specialize in many areas, including pediatric surgery, neonatology, oncology, cardiology, pulmonary and much more.
