FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. Paul C. Magarelli, M.D., Ph.D., New Mexico's newest and only Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist, has been selected to present his research on "Integrating Acupuncture with High Tech In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Procedures" at the 12th World Congress on Human Reproduction in Venice, Italy.
In Magarelli's study, comprised of more than 200 couples that had undergone IVF, approximately half of the women had undergone acupuncture treatments, and the other half had not. Results showed that significantly more pregnancies were noted in the acupuncture groups (60 percent) versus the control group (40 percent). Magarelli also found that significantly fewer miscarriages were noted in the women who had acupuncture compared to those who did not.
For the past three years, Magarelli has been working with local acupuncturists to integrate 5,000-year-old Chinese acupuncture techniques to enhance and improve IVF outcomes.
Magarelli's work was coauthored by Doctor of Oriental Medicine Diane K. Cridennda, L.Ac., who is pleased with the results. "Couples now have the best of both worlds," she said. "They can get the newest technology and treatments that have 5,000 years of historical application".
For Magarelli's research on the impact of acupuncture on IVF outcomes, he won the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society's best research award by a private practice physician. Magarelli was presented with the award in April, 2004.
Magarelli comes to UNM from Colorado Springs where he has been providing "high tech with a personal touch" treatments since August, 1998. Only nine months old, the RMFC@NM recently celebrated its first New Mexico IVF baby. Magarelli's pregnancy success rate regularly surpasses national statistics.
Magarelli will host a number of free infertility seminars throughout the year for couples who are trying to start families. The next "In Search of the Stork" seminar is March 21 at 6 p.m. Reservations for the free seminars can be made by calling 272-3886.
Magarelli will be available for interviews when he returns from Italy, March 21.
RMFC@NM is dedicated to providing New Mexico residents with options for superior high-tech fertility care. The center's motto, "High Tech with a Personal Touch," reflects its commitment to compassionate, comprehensive and state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of infertility couples. Regardless of Magarelli's outstanding success rate, Magarelli continues to dedicate his practice and his focus to "one healthy baby."
