UNM Health Sciences Center Honors Top Nurses

The UNM Health Sciences Center is honoring its nurses this year during National Nurses' Week, May 6-12. Six nurses were presented with Outstanding Nurse Awards, and received a pin commemorating the honor.

Outstanding nurses were Brenda Sanchez, ICN; Suzanne Sperry, Pediatric Subacute; Cynthia Martinez, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit; Carla Rodriguez, General Pediatric Unit; Lois Ames, RN Resident, and Julie Makatura, Women's Care Unit.

In addition, Distinguished Nurses were chosen from each department including UNM Hospital, the UNM Mental Health Center, Cancer Research and Treatment Center, Children's Psychiatric Hospital and Carrie Tingley Hospital.

National Nurses' Week begins on May 6, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. New Mexico Congressman Manual Lujan was one of the supporters of the proclamation for "National Recognition Day for Nurses" that was signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. Nurses in New Mexico initiated the resolution.
