Only New Mexico Hospital to Make 2011 List

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – UNM Hospital (UNMH) has been named one of the 100 Most-Wired Hospitals and Health Systems in the U.S. by the American Hospital Association (AHA) for the eighth consecutive year, and nine years total.

UNM Hospital, the state’s only Level I Trauma Center, is the sole New Mexico hospital on this year’s list. According to the American Hospital Association, this year’s accolade is based on a national survey of 1,280 hospitals that measures the use of information technology (IT) to accomplish key goals, including infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety, and care continuum.

The American Hospital Association contends that "most-wired" hospitals use a wider array of IT tools that can include computerized physician order entry; bedside electronic medication matching; automated alerts and reminders; physician portals; electronic patient monitoring; and computerized lifetime medical records.

“We continue to make excellent progress toward fulfilling our technology mission of a total Electronic Medical Record (EMR)," remarks Glen Jornigan, hospital administrator for information technology at UNMH. "We've gotten to this point on our own initiative, but plan to take full advantage of federal stimulus monies over the next two years to complete our EMR in support of our patient care mission".

The UNM Hospital system includes five facilities – UNM Hospital, UNM Children’s Hospital, UNM Carrie Tingley Hospital, UNM Psychiatric Center, and UNM Children’s Psychiatric Center.
