The Midwifery division of the UNM School of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has established itself as a nationally recognized program.

The program has consistently ranked annually by US News and World Report as one of the top 10 midwifery training programs and most recently was the recipient of national golden commendation by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

The ACNM awarded the UNM Midwifery program with the "ACNM with Women for a Lifetime Award" an honor recognizing programs that have provided 25 years of innovative and compassionate midwifery care.

Current research conducted by the Midwifery program at UNM includes:

·         Clinical measures to lower genital tract trauma at birth

·         Function after childbirth trial

Areas of Special Interest include:

·         Routine prenatal care and delivery

·         Prenatal care and delivery of women with substance abuse problems

·         Young mother's centering pregnancy program

·         Family planning care

·         Well women's care women of all ages
