On Thursday, September 8, the UNM Health Sciences Center held a grand opening for its new, 17,000-ftdental clinic located at 1801 Camino de Salud NE. The clinic will serve as the primary general dentistry training site in New Mexico for dental residents.

UNM wants to provide opportunities for dental school graduates to return to New Mexico for any advanced residency training. This new clinic will expand UNM’s dental residency program, providing advanced training for residents across a wide spectrum of dental disciplines.

Thirteen-plus faculty members will utilize 14 dental operatories, two dental hygiene stations and two oral surgery rooms to provide New Mexico dentists with skills beyond their dental school education, preparing them to practice in New Mexico rural areas with patients who have limited access to care.

According to Dr. Gary Cuttrell, chair of the UNM Department of Dental Medicine, the expansion is necessary. UNM’s General Dentistry Residency Program has seen a significant increase in patient visits – predominantly underserved patients and those with medically complex conditions. Moreover, increasing numbers of New Mexicans are completing dental school, and UNM’s General Dentist Residency has doubled in the last five years.
