UNM Pathology Resident Doubles as a Ninja
Pathologist Favia Dubyk is petite. Her blue lab coat hangs off of her 5-foot-2-inch frame as her gloved hands delicately work splicing critical samples of tissue onto microscope slides. Her face is accentuated by big, beautiful dark eyes, which beam brightly into the lens of the camera. It’s that look she gives, followed by a giggly laugh that makes it clear – don’t underestimate her.
The day I spent with her was anything but normal. Camera men squeezed into the “Gross Room” at the TriCore Reference Laboratory inside The University of New Mexico Hospital. Tripods, lights and microphones took over workstations in the processing room normally used for dissection, inspection and sampling.
Dubyk showed off equipment to the camera, using her own breakfast of oatmeal and a hamburger to simulate a sample that needed to be cut into using a bone saw. Nearby, her colleagues dissected tissue and recorded their findings into microphones to be sent back to the physicians and surgeons awaiting word.
Every once in a while I would catch one of them looking up at the reality show circus that was taking place in the normally quiet laboratory and smile. In the back you could hear whispers of, “What’s going on?” Followed by, “Didn’t you hear? Favia is going to be on American Ninja Warrior!”
That’s right, doctor by day, ninja by night. It really isn’t surprising to hear the pathology resident took on the challenging ninja course. In fact, when you get to know her, it may just be the easiest thing she’s ever done.
Dubyk, M.D., M.S., got her bachelor degree from Harvard, her graduate degree from Columbia and rounded things out by graduating medical school at Case Western Reserve University. Oh, and did I mention she beat cancer during that time too?
Now the real question is, did she beat the course? She’s been training hard for years, even posing in her wedding dress while hanging on to a boulder. Her journey through the love of everything outdoors is chronicled on a climbing website. After months of speculation, American Ninja Warrior will air May 30th at 7 p.m. Mountain time on NBC.

Whether she makes it to the buzzer or not, just know Dr. Favia Dubyk can do anything she sets her mind to.
We will be profiling more of the amazing Dr. Dubyk later this summer. Be sure and check back to the HSC Newsroom for her story.
