UNMH Employees Learn English as Second Language

The University of New Mexico Hospital English as Second Language program will applaud the efforts of trainers and students who have challenged themselves to learn and instruct English as a second language at a graduation celebration with keynote speaker, Steve McKernan, CEO of UNMH on May 26, 2005 at 3 p.m.
The Organizational & Professional Development (OPD), a division of UNMH Human Resources, has helped sponsor this in-house English as Second Language (ESL) training for UNMH employees. The first 10-week basic (ESL) course finished May 11, 2005
There are currently 15 students enrolled in the course, dedicated to gaining an experience of a lifetime. "There is an increase of the number of staff who are interested in the program and numbers are expected to rise," said Steve McKernan.
The Interpreter/Translator Language Program created and developed the English as Second Language courses. These courses are offered in different levels, which are instructed by Maria Kearney, Pamela Ortega and Claudia Martinez (professional Interpreters/Translators) under the direction of Guadalupe Reyes, Supervisor/Interpreter for the program. "The course will help our employees communicate better so as to advance at University Hospitals," said Reyes.
The Interpreter/Translator Program's primary mission is to serve all patients through this educational program for employees. The program will plan to offer intermediate and advanced courses in the future. The sessions will be basic ESL as well (based on employee needs and skill levels).
