The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), which determines accreditation status of all U.S. medical schools, will conduct its next accreditation site visit at the UNM School of Medicine on February 21-24, 2010. Dean Paul Roth, with the LCME Executive Committee, has created an LCME Steering Committee with the charge of conducting an Institutional Self-Study in preparation for the site visit. Six subcommittees have been formed to address all areas of medical education at UNM:

Medical Student Self-Study Committee

Each subcommittee, comprised of junior and senior faculty, administrators, staff and students, will answer in-depth questions posed by the LCME regarding every component of our medical education program. This provides the SOM with the opportunity for self-evaluation and improvement as well as certification that the SOM is meeting the educational standards for accreditation. After completing the database questions, each committee will also write a report on their topics and all topical reports will be integrated into a summary institutional self-study report. This report will then be submitted to the LCME, and a site visit on February 21-24, 2010, will finish the review.

Students will play an important role in the self-study, participating on each subcommittee as well as running their own subcommittee to conduct an independent student-based self-study of the medical school. This subcommittee will conduct a survey of our medical students’ experiences and opinions to develop a comprehensive picture of how students perceive the medical school, and use those results in conjunction with the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire results to provide the student review and analysis of the medical education program, student services, learning environment, and adequacy of educational resources. This report will be included in the final institutional self-study report submitted to the LCME.
