“Precious Gems” child abuse prevention gala slated April 23

Recent data culled for 2015 suggests some improvement in New Mexico in the area of child abuse, with sexual abuse decreasing by 4 percent, according to NM-CAPP Executive Director Dr. Susan Miller. Unfortunately, physical abuse increased by 6 percent, and child neglect increased by 21 percent over the same period.

UNM student Kyle Stepp’s life goal and passion are to raise money for the UNM Children’s Hospital. You can help him on Saturday, April 2, starting at noon at Johnson Center, where hundreds of participants are expected to dance for over 13 hours during Lobothon. Last year the event raised more than $40,000.

When Lisa Chavez's 7-year-old daughter started to put on an unhealthy amount of weight, she knew it was time for a change. So she took her daughter to the University of New Mexico Healthy and Fit Children’s Clinic, a program that provides treatment for children and adolescents with overweight and obesity issues.
