Susana Martinez has proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month throughout the state, affirming “New Mexico’s commitment to inclusive workplaces and community.” The UNM Center for Development and Disability kicked off the month with a reading of the proclamation and a job fair.

BBHI lands $11.6 million grant for brain injury research

The University of New Mexico’s Brain and Behavioral Health Institute (BBHI) has secured a five-year $11.6 million federal grant to find new ways of helping people recover from the catastrophic effects of stroke and traumatic brain injuries. The funding will help establish a new Center for Brain Recovery and Repair that brings together researchers from across the UNM campus to focus on developing new treatments, said BBHI director Bill Shuttleworth, PhD, a Regents’ Professor in the UNM Department of Neurosciences.

The UNM Center for Development and Disability is hosting its annual Southwest Conference on Disability, Tues. – Fri., Oct. 4-7, at the Albuquerque Convention Center. This is one of the largest disability conferences in the country, hosting hundreds of disability providers and participants with disabilities from around the nation.
