HSC research helps biopharmaceutical start-up battle cancer

The company is based on technology developed by Dr. Kristina Trujillo at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Trujillo’s research focuses on how cells in normal tissue surrounding breast tumors naturally produce particles called exosomes that are highly toxic to breast cancer cells. “Most people develop many cancerous growths over their lifetime,” Trujillo says. “But most of these cancers are eliminated by the body’s intrinsic cancer protection mechanisms. We believe we have discovered one of these mechanisms and are now developing a new type of cancer drug based on that discovery."

STC.UNM's co-investment fund invests $89,000 in EcoPesticides

Ravi Durvasula, MD, created the technology with co-inventor Adam Forshaw in his lab at the UNM Health Sciences Center. The New Mexico Angels recognized the commercial potential of the technology, established EcoPesticides through the New Mexico Startup Factory, provided early stage capital, and ultimately secured an exclusive global license from STC.
