UNM's Project ECHO receives $6.4 million grant to expand diabetes care

The fight against diabetes in New Mexico is getting a big boost from the Helmsley Charitable Trust and the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. The trust today announced a $6.4 million grant for UNM’s Project ECHO, a healthcare education and delivery model that links community-based clinicians with UNM specialists to treat patients with complex conditions.

Gov. Susana Martinez this week signed into law a state budget that included $600,000 for the Department of Health to expand telemedicine services in the state, and a $500,000 increase for Project ECHO, an internationally recognized telemedicine model developed at UNM more than a decade ago.
