Project ECHO, based at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, creates new capacity to treat chronic complex conditions in local communities by expanding the skill sets of the providers who are already there. It links community providers with specialist care teams at academic medical centers to manage patients who require complex specialty care.

Gov. Susana Martinez this week signed into law a state budget that included $600,000 for the Department of Health to expand telemedicine services in the state, and a $500,000 increase for Project ECHO, an internationally recognized telemedicine model developed at UNM more than a decade ago.
