The University of New Mexico Hospital recently received national recognition from The Lown Institute and U.S. News & World Report for the superb care it provides to New Mexicans.
The Lown Institute: UNM Hospital Is a Top 25 Academic Medical Center
The Lown Institute, a nonprofit healthcare think tank, recognized UNM Hospital in its Hospitals Index for 2026-2027, ranking it 24th out of 215 academic medical centers across the U.S. UNM Hospital is part of the UNM Health Sciences Center, an academic medical center that delivers clinical care, trains new healthcare providers across multiple disciplines, conducts world-class biomedical research and contributes to community health across New Mexico.
“The providers and staff of UNM Hospital are deeply committed to providing access to quality care for all New Mexicans,” said UNM Hospital CEO Kate Becker. “We are proud to have been recognized as one of the top 25 academic medical centers nationally, meeting that mission in the context of training future healthcare providers and supporting research into new and better methods of care.”
The Lown Institute also ranked UNM Hospital third out of 20 New Mexico acute care facilities in the category of “Social Responsibility,” and it recognized UNM Hospital as a top-25 healthcare center in the nation – and first in New Mexico – in the “Equity” subcategory, which “reflects commitment to equity, inclusion and community health,” according to the institute’s website. Overall, UNM Hospital ranked 24th out of 2,706 hospitals nationwide for equity in healthcare.
UNM Hospital also ranked third out of 20 New Mexico hospitals for “Pay Equity,” first out of 20 for “Community Benefit” and first out of 14 for “Inclusivity.”

U.S. News & World Report: UNM Hospital Recognized Among Best Hospitals

U.S. News & World Report has recognized UNM Hospital on its list of “Best Hospitals” for 2026-2027. The online publication, known for providing rankings for a variety of categories and industries, including healthcare, gave UNM Hospital the “High-Performing Hospitals” designation, highlighting its exceptional care in six areas:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Hip Fracture
- Kidney Failure
- Leukemia
- Lymphoma & Myeloma
- Stroke
“We’re honored to once again be recognized by U.S. News & World Report,” Becker said. “Our providers and staff work hard every day to deliver high-quality care, across the board, to New Mexicans. We’re excited to be recognized for certain areas of care in which our healthcare teams excel.”
Becker noted UNM Hospital was designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission earlier in 2026, representing its ability to provide the highest level of stroke care.
Looking Ahead
UNM Hospital’s continued commitment to serving New Mexicans has the full support of UNM’s new president, Becker said.
“Under the leadership of President Steve Goldstein — a noted physician and biomedical researcher in his own right — we expect that UNM Hospital and our larger academic medical center will continue to grow,” she said. “We look forward to being able to serve New Mexico in an even greater capacity.”
