The Lobo Cancer Challenge is entering its ninth year as the premiere fundraiser for The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center, and everyone is invited to sign up beginning Monday, May 9.

Over the past eight years the community event has raised more than $2.7 million to fight cancer.

The community effort supports cancer research, patients, outreach and education and training at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only cancer center in the state to hold Comprehensive designation from the National Cancer Institute.

Participants, called Challengers, have supported a variety of programs within the UNM Cancer Center, from research into a variety of cancer types to supporting patients and their families who travel great distances to receive the world-class care the center offers.

Originally an event that focused on cycling, the Lobo Cancer Challenge now incorporates a 5K run/walk. Challengers can climb every stair in University Stadium and children age 10 and younger can take part in the Cub Pack Kids Fun Run.

The bicycle events include 25- and 50-mile rides that will take Challengers along the Albuquerque Bosque or around the city, respectively.

The event has brought together people from all walks of life and from more than 20 states, and includes a virtual component for Challengers far and wide.

“Our sponsors and our Challengers are a part of our team,” said UNM Cancer Center CEO and Director Yolanda Sanchez, PhD. “Their hard work and support of the UNM Cancer Center plays a vital role in the discoveries that take place here and the quality of care we provide all New Mexicans.”

The event takes place Sept. 20 at University Stadium.

Last year, more than 1,700 Challengers and 72 sponsors raised $652,000.

“We are immensely appreciative of all of the people over the last eight years who have made this event a success,” said event director Amy Liotta. “Their participation reflects not only of the generosity of our community but also the widespread impact cancer has on each of us.”

Liotta added that thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors, every dollar raised by participants will go directly to the UNM Cancer Center fund of their choice.

People who sign up between May 9 and 16 will receive a 10% discount on registration fees.
